Achievements

Description

Main discoveries and establishments so far are as follows (see publication list for details):

  1. Novel structure of plant tRNAs and their coding genes: plant nuclear tRNAMet-e gene ubiquitously possesses introns and plant tRNAHis contains exceptional C54 in the canonical TΨC loop. These unique structures have been confirmed by disclosure of plant genome sequences determined in recent progress of plant genome project of many species.
  2. Molecular mechanism of plant precursor tRNA splicing in wheat germ nuclear extracts.
  3. Plant tRNA splicing enzymes some of which are localized in organella.
  4. Efficient system of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in Arabidopsis thaliana using hypocotyls as target tissues.
  5. Functional analysis of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) that catalyzes conversion of glutamate to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in rice.
  6. Creation of higher active GAD by protein engineering.
  7. Establishment of GABA-enriched rice grain by genetic manipulation of GABA metabolism.
  8. Confirmation of blood pressure-lowering effect of GABA-enriched rice in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR).
